How Formthotics Help

Formthotics are medical-grade orthotics that are:

  • Fitted to your feet – often gently heat-moulded by your clinician so they match your unique shape.
  • Supportive where you need it most – helping reduce stress on tired or painful areas of your feet.
  • Firm yet comfortable – guiding your foot into a healthier position while still allowing natural movement.
  • Made from closed-cell Formax™ foam – lightweight, hard-wearing and easy to keep clean and fresh. Unlike spongy memory foams, Formthotics are built to hold their shape and support.

You’re not just wearing “insoles”. You’re wearing a custom medical device, selected specifically by your clinician to support your movement and comfort.

What to Expect in Your First Few Weeks

As time passes, you’ll notice your Formthotics will start to ‘wear-in’ - this is a good thing!

Often normal: A feeling of firm support, mild muscle tiredness, and increased awareness as your body adjusts.
Not normal: Sharp, worsening pain, burning, or new symptoms you’re worried about – reduce your wear time and contact your clinician.

Week 1:
Getting Used to the New Support

- Put your Formthotics into the shoes you wear the most (for work or day-to-day).

- Wear them for most of the day.

- If your feet feel very tired or strongly aware of the new support, you can take a short break (an hour without them), then put them back in and continue.

- It’s normal to feel more contact under your arch or further towards the heel, a feeling of being “held” differently. This is your foot learning a healthier position.

11

Week 2:
Let Your Body Learn the New Position

- Keep wearing your Formthotics throughout the day in your main shoes.

- You may notice muscles in your calves, ankles or legs feeling a bit different as your posture and alignment adjust. Gentle stretching can help.

-Short breaks are fine if you need them, but bring yourself back to your Formthotics when you can.

Week 3:
Making Formthotics Part of Everyday Life

- By this stage, most people find Formthotics are completely comfortable and the support they feel from them is second nature.

- If your clinician has recommended using them in other shoes (sport, work, or specific activities), this is often a good time to start.

-Your orthotics should begin to feel like a natural part of your shoes rather than something “extra”.

Simple Care for Comfort & Freshness

Formthotics are made from closed-cell Formax™ foam, which is designed to keep its shape and support instead of flattening like soft, open-cell foams.

To look after your orthotics:

  • Clean: Wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap when needed.
  • Dry: Let them air-dry naturally, away from heaters, dryers or direct sunlight.
  • Refresh: Remove them from your shoes occasionally to let both your shoes and your Formthotics breathe.
  • Check: From time to time, look for any signs of damage or changes in shape, especially if you spend long hours on your feet.

If you’re ever unsure about fit or comfort, your clinician is there to help.

Why Many People Choose More Than One Pair

One pair of Formthotics is a powerful start. Many people find that adding another pair (or more) makes it easier to stay comfortable and supported across their whole week.

Formthotics product stacked on top of each other

1. Always in the Right Shoes

Moving a single pair from shoe to shoe is a hassle – and it’s one of the main reasons people stop wearing their orthotics consistently.

With more than one pair, you can:

- Keep a pair permanently in your main work shoes

- Keep another pair in your trainers or exercise shoes

- Have a better fitting pair for dress or narrower shoes, if your clinician recommends it.

2. Stay Consistent With Your Treatment

Formthotics aren’t just about easing pain now – they’re about helping you stay comfortable and active long term. When you only have one pair, it’s easy to skip them “just this once” for short trips or quick activities.

More pairs make it simpler to:

- Stick to your clinician’s plan, even on busy days

- Keep support under your feet in the situations where you need it most

- Avoid the cycle of wear → feel better → stop wearing → symptoms return

3. Fresh Shoes, Fresh Feel

Even though the closed-cell Formax™ foam doesn’t absorb sweat like sponge-like foams, your shoes still appreciate time to air out.

Having more than one pair of Formthotics makes it easier to:

- Rotate between shoes so each pair has time to breathe

- Step into a fresher environment each day

- Keep things feeling clean and comfortable, especially if you work long shifts or are active

Quick Fixes if Something Feels Off

Little adjustments can make a big difference to comfort.

“They feel too big for some of my shoes.”

  • Not every shoe and one pair of orthotics will be a perfect match.
  • Your clinician may recommend a different Formthotics style for dress shoes, safety footwear or sport-specific shoes.
  • If the orthotics feel too long for your favourite shoes, a little trim around the toe section with a pair of scissors is fine.

“I’m not sure they’re sitting in the right place.”

  • Check that the heel of your Formthotics is right back in the heel of the shoe.
  • The highest part of the arch of your Formthotics should sit under the arch of your foot, not behind your toes.
  • If it still doesn’t feel right, ask your clinician to check the fit.
